Legislative Issues

Proposed Lien Law Changes

The time is here! Our Legislative Committee’s commitment to TNSSA members has produced a lien law proposal. With the board’s review and approval it will be presented to the legislature in the first quarter of 2011 seeking sponsorship. Members may view the proposed new law and highlights here if you don't have your membership i.d. and password contact us . Non-members may request a copy by e-mail.

Some items that have been updated are:

Consider for a moment what these changes will mean to your facility. Other states that have made similar changes to their lien laws have saved their facility owners thousands of dollars in lien processing fees and have simplified the lien process and clarified many of the ‘unknowns’ of the current law.

Tennessee State Lien Law...

The Legislative Committee's first task is to modify our current lien law and put a state-of-the-art lien law in place, with an efficient and streamlined lien notification process and reasonable default timelines.

Our success depends on your involvement. Only the loud voices are heard!

Tennessee Sales Tax...

Because a number of states have tried recently to enact state and local sales taxes on self storage rents, the Legislative Committee believes we must work proactively to ensure Tennessee does not follow suit.

Other issues that the Legislative Committee will be working in conjunction with the SSA are reasonable property taxes, abandoned records management, disposition and other privacy issues.

The TNSSA Legislative Committee is chaired by Sherry Cole and overseen by Vice President, Melissa Roberts with input and direction from the Board of Directors and works with the Communications and Website Committees to communicate with our members.

If you would like to assist the Legislative Committee, please contact Sherry at cole.s@vcnet.com.

A contribution to the TNSSA Legislative Fund, in any amount, is always welcomed and will be recognized in the TNSSA newsletter. Checks made payable to TNSSA may be mailed to Attn: David Woodard, 209 Hancock Street, Gallatin, TN 37066
